Emojis and emoticons have added a new dimension to expressing thoughts and emotions on these platforms. However, various questions and debates have emerged within the Muslim community regarding the permissibility of using emojis from an Islamic perspective. This article provides a detailed explanation of the Shari’i rulings on the use of emojis by analyzing the Quran, Hadith, and the opinions of Islamic scholars. The importance of Taqwa (piety) and Parhezgari (abstinence from sin) regarding this matter will also be discussed at the end, Insha’Allah.

The Prohibition of Depicting Living Beings and Emojis:
In Islam, drawing pictures or creating sculptures of living beings is strictly prohibited. It is stated in the Hadith that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “Whoever makes a picture of a living being will be asked on the Day of Resurrection to breathe a soul into it, but he will not be able to do so.” (Sahih Bukhari and Muslim). Another narration states: “Those who make these images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them, ‘Make alive what you have created.’” (Sahih Bukhari).

Based on these Hadiths, some scholars believe that if an emoji is a complete representation of a living creature or a depiction of a human face, it may fall under this prohibition. Although an emoji is not a hand-drawn picture, it is a digital representation of an image that portrays the shape of a living being. According to Islamic scholars, any image that is easily recognizable and portrays a complete figure is included in the prohibition of depicting living beings. Although emojis are small in size, they clearly manifest the features of a human or animal.

Shari’i Analysis of Various Types of Emojis:

1. Emojis of Complete Living Beings:
Emojis that represent the complete form of an animal—such as a cat, turtle, frog, tiger, dinosaur, chick, camel, etc.—are considered Haram (prohibited) or Makruh Tahrimi (strictly disliked/prohibited) by most scholars. This is because they directly fall under the prohibition mentioned in the Hadith. Users of such emojis may face severe accountability on the Day of Judgment.

2. Emojis of Human Faces or Body Parts:
There is a difference of opinion regarding emojis containing human facial expressions (e.g., smiling, crying) or body parts (e.g., waving hands, nodding). One group of scholars believes that since these represent parts of a living being, they are also prohibited. Their argument is that although these emojis are small, they fully express human emotions or gestures, fulfilling the primary purpose of depicting a living being. The prohibition by Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) is not limited to three-dimensional statues but applies to any image that takes the form of a living creature.

Another group of scholars suggests that since these emojis are cartoon-like and do not represent a complete human figure, they might not be directly Haram. However, since it is a doubtful matter, it is better for a pious Muslim to avoid them. In particular, emojis that depict full human figures (e.g., two people, dancing figures, couples, families, cyclists, runners, Santa Claus) are clearly prohibited, as there is a stern warning of punishment regarding the demand to “give life” to such figures.

3. Emojis Containing Symbols of Other Religions:
It is unanimously Haram to use emojis containing symbols of other religions. This includes symbols such as the Hindu gesture of prayer (Namaste), the atomic symbol (used in some New Age spiritualism), symbols of Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Taoism, Christianity, Eastern Orthodoxy, Islam (notably the crescent and star, which was an Ottoman symbol rather than a core Islamic one), the peace symbol (which carries religious/spiritual connotations in some cases), the Hanukkah Menorah, the Hexagram or six-pointed star (associated with magic or Kabbalah), etc. Islam strictly prohibits Shirk (polytheism) and the imitation of non-Islamic cultures (Tashabbuh). Promoting or using symbols of other faiths is completely forbidden for a Muslim. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them.” (Sunan Abu Dawood).

4. Obscene or Un-Islamic Emojis:
Emojis that promote obscenity, alcohol consumption (e.g., wine glasses, beer mugs), satanic symbols (e.g., devil faces, devil gestures), or any other prohibited matter are Haram. The promotion of obscenity and forbidden acts is strictly prohibited in Islam. Allah the Almighty says in the Holy Quran: “Indeed, those who like that immorality should be spread [or publicized] among those who have believed will have a painful punishment in this world and the Hereafter.” (Surah An-Nur 24:19).

5. Emojis of Musical Instruments:
While there is some difference of opinion among scholars regarding the use of musical instruments, the majority consider them Makruh or Haram. Therefore, one should refrain from using emojis of musical instruments (e.g., trumpet, guitar, violin, music notes, saxophone).

6. Love React (Heart Symbol) and Christmas Tree Emojis:
Scholars like Sheikh Abdul Aziz bin Baz (RA) and Sheikh Salih al-Uthaymeen (RA), as well as the permanent Fatwa board of Saudi Arabia, have issued rulings that using the “Love” (heart) symbol is not permissible. In their view, it is a part of non-Islamic culture and is not the prescribed way to express affection in Islam. Therefore, using this symbol should be avoided.

Similarly, the Christmas tree emoji, being a religious symbol of the Christian festival, should also be avoided. Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) forbade participating in the festivals or cultures of non-believers.

7. Inanimate Object Emojis:
Emojis representing non-living things—such as trees, flowers, fruits, houses, vehicles, and nature (e.g., sun, mountains, apples, cars)—are permissible (Halal). This is because they do not fall under the prohibition of depicting living beings.

The Mindset of Accepting Counsel and Taqwa:
In reality, not everyone accepts sound advice. Only those who fear Allah take heed. Allah the Almighty says in the Holy Quran: “He who fears [Allah] will remember [the advice].” (Surah Al-A’la 87:10). Elsewhere He says: “(We have not sent down to you the Quran that you be distressed), but only as a reminder for those who fear [Allah].” (Surah Ta-Ha 20:02-03). Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala also says: “Only those of understanding will take heed.” (Surah Az-Zumar 39:9).

A person who truly wishes to adopt Taqwa (piety) does not even need to question the permissibility of these emojis. They seek to keep themselves safe from all doubtful matters. Alhamdulillah, many Muslims have researched these issues and realized that such emojis should not be used, and they refrain from using them. When a believer stays away from something Haram or doubtful out of fear of Allah, Allah keeps a great reward for them.

Conclusion:
It is worth recalling a statement by Sheikh Uthaymeen (RA), who said: “A believer should not engage in any action that brings them close to what is forbidden, or which might be forbidden for them.” This principle applies to the use of emojis. While there may be differences of opinion on certain emojis, a person living a life of Taqwa always exercises caution and stays away from prohibited or doubtful matters.

A Muslim should be extremely cautious regarding the use of emojis. Refraining from using full images of animals, human faces, symbols of other religions, obscene or prohibited symbols, and elements of non-Islamic culture is a sign of Taqwa. Emojis of inanimate objects that do not fall under any Shari’i prohibition are permissible to use. It is best for a believer to always fear Allah and avoid doubtful matters. May Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala grant us all the correct understanding and the tawfiq (ability) to live our lives according to His pleasure. Ameen.

And Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala knows best.

Introduction:In the current digital age, social media has become an inseparable part of our daily lives.
